3 Hidden Gems in Northern Spain: Cantabria's Charm

Introduction

Sharing my Pack Like a Pro series has me reminiscing about my recent trip to Northern Spain. Spain is one of my favorite countries I’ve been to so far. After traveling there a couple times, I’ve learned that each region of Spain has its own culture, culinary scene and languages. Although I love planning trips to popular cities, I try to include at least one day to explore lesser known destinations. Doing so allows me to get my wanderlust fix and explore less known areas. It's a great way to connect with the authentic culture of that region. 

The origin of Basque Country in northern Spain predates recorded history. Basque culture has a distinct language, its own traditions, and a strong regional identity. You may have heard of San Sebastian, the culinary paradise of northern Spain, but have you heard of Santillana del Mar?  It's an enchanting town that transports you back in time, into a medieval fairytale. It's a living testament to the medieval charm and architectural elegance that Northern Spain is renowned for. These are the three hidden gems I loved in Cantabria:

Bárcena Mayor

A preserved, residential and rural village nestled in the mountains of Cantabria. It traces its roots to medieval times, showcasing rural and medieval architecture, with cobblestone streets, stone houses, wooden balconies and windows, decorated with hanging flowers. Strolling this town felt like stepping into a living fairytale.

Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana

A Romanesque church dating back to the 12th century. The church underwent various renovations over the centuries, resulting in a blend of architectural styles. Its intricate façade entails beautiful carving and detail, and the vast rolling hills behind the church make it an even more beautiful view. The church is an example of medieval religious architecture and remains a cherished symbol of Santillana del Mar's historical and cultural heritage.

Mirador del Acantilado El Bolao

A scenic cliff point. I’m a gal who loves water views, and this cliff view is one I won’t forget. 

Santillana del Mar, with its rich cultural heritage, well-preserved architecture and breathtaking landscape, is a must-visit destination for travelers seeking an authentic experience in lesser known areas of Northern Spain.
